Support The Making of This Powerful Documentary

"The Ties That Bind" is a documentary that takes a deep dive into the many factors contributing to three major cancers, Prostate, Colorectal, and Pancreatic, that hit African American communities especially hard. The film blends personal stories, expert medical insights, and social analysis to show how these cancers impact individuals, families, and the community as a whole.

African American men are about 60% more likely to develop prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from it compared to white men.

Colorectal cancer rates are about 20% higher among African Americans, with death rates roughly 40% higher. Pancreatic cancer is also more common in African Americans, with rates 15-30% higher, and survival rates are lower compared to other groups.

The documentary also highlights the importance of mindset and mental well-being in the healing process. It shows how attitudes, support systems, and coping strategies can significantly impact both patients' and caregivers' outcomes and quality of life. Powerful personal accounts reveal how positivity, community, and holistic wellness can make a real difference.

What Happens If We Don’t Hit Our Goal?

Every dollar raised will still go directly toward making The Ties That Bind a reality. While our full funding goal allows us to complete the documentary at the highest level, covering travel, production, post, and outreach, we’re prepared to scale accordingly. If we don’t hit the full amount, we’ll use the funds to get started and film as much as we can and continue fundraising through further crowdfunding, grants, events, and sponsorships. Your support is never wasted, it moves this project forward and helps amplify the voices this story was made to honor.

Risk & Challenges

As with any documentary project, there are always variables, scheduling interviews, coordinating travel, or navigating last-minute production delays. However, our team is experienced and prepared. Landi previously directed and completed the award-winning documentary The Silent Killer: Prostate Cancer in The African American Community, which faced similar logistical challenges and was delivered successfully.

The biggest challenge is ensuring we secure the full level of funding needed to tell this story at the scale and depth it deserves. But we’ve built flexibility into our production plan and can adapt if needed, starting with strategic filming phases.

We’re also taking proactive steps to stay on track: securing early subject commitments, planning efficient travel schedules, and building in post-production contingencies. With your support, we’re confident we’ll bring The Ties That Bind to the screen, and beyond, with integrity, impact, and heart.
